We know that virtual particles permeate space (a vacuum) and according to QED every particle spends some time as a combination of other particles in all possible ways popping in and out of existence.
Now we also know that space has an odour. Astronauts coming back from space-walks. One astronaut said about the scent “the best description I can come up with is metallic; a rather pleasant sweet metallic sensation”.
