When people say correct

Last night I watched Rake - ABC1's brilliant new legal comedy/drama. In one scenes Rake (Richard Roxburgh) takes issue with one of the dinner guests when she says “correct” “you are absolutely correct” seemingly when agreeing with one of the guests. So I thought how true. How when my friends use “correct” - I think how condescending.

Rake explains, when somebody says something that you agree with, you don’t say yes, or ah ha, you say correct. It’s like a school teacher talking to a 10 year old. Rake continues our not “actually agreeing, you are approving”. It’s as if the statement isn’t valid until you deem it to be right. And “well, it’ s if you are the arbiter of the truth – it’s a way of being smug or superior.
