Plastics and Synthetica

Jack DikianApril 2012

Reading about plastics and the role they played in post war culture, and possibilities of a new industrial world. I can still remember my mother insisting on an orange themed Formica kitchen.  It’s fascinating how plastics and their use, changed form, function, and design. We, in more recent years have shifted our impression of all things plastic. If anything, however, there is no question we use plastics now more than ever – these have been integrated into our lives so much so that we hardly stop and think we are buying plastic.

What is interesting is the significance of plastics in those post-war years. In 1940 Fortune magazine published a map of a brand new continent. The map, called Synthetica (see pic) with countries such as Nylon and a new territory Melamine and even an exciting island called Rayon which was supposedly known for it’s nightlife.

Titanic goes down on Twitter

Titanic goes down on Twitter

As we know on the morning of April 15, 1912, the sinking of the Titanic the previous night shocked the world. That year was full of promise and the maiden voyage of the Titanic was a symbol of the advances mankind had made in the last few years. The ship was considered to have been so well constructed it was believed she could sustain any amount of damage and still remain afloat. Late on the night of April 14, 1912, the sinking of the Titanic proved this idea wrong in a horribly tragic way.

One hundred years on (this week) April 14, 2012, bells will toll from the three churches – St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica, St. Paul’s Anglican Church and St. George’s Round Church. These are the same churches whose bells first rang out when the first death ship returned to Canada on April 30, 1912. In Cape Race, Nfld., the closest landmass to the Titanic, emergency flares will be set off and a moment of silence held at 12:27 a.m. to mark the last time a distress call was received by the Marconi wireless system.

Also, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic will broadcast the Titanic’s original wireless transmissions in real time on Twitter. The hash tag for the 2012 real time account on Twitter is #TitanicMMA and communications will be tweeted from 11.55pm Newfoundland Standard Time on April 14 (12.55pm April 15 Sydney time) to mimic the time of communications.

Kids aspire to be famous

Jack Dikian
April 2012

It seems it isn’t just teens who are influenced by the celebrity phenomena – following their glamorous lives, their highs and lows, style, diets, fashion, language and worse idiosyncrasies.

A global survey of 4600 children by developmental charity ChildFund found 21% of kids in developed countries long to be famous, dreaming of being singers or actors. This is compared with only 9% of kids wanting to be teachers and 8 per cent doctors.

In contrast, Over 20% of kids in developing countries want to be teachers and 20 per cent hope to become doctors.

Reminiscing

(Postcard from Ballina)

Isn’t it funny how we always return to days so long ago. We look back at the things we used to know. The things we used to do, the things we used to say, the memories dear and true. The poems we used to read and how they made us feel.

The thoughts of Nanushka always help and here is one to read.

"A SOLITARY seagull
rides home
on a shaft of golden sun -
our beautiful day
is melting into dusk -
pink clouds
fade back to sombre grey
and your dear face
is touched with gold -
why should we mourn
the passing of our day
because we know
the night
belongs to us."

Jimmy Little, Inspirational to many…

Jack Dikian
April 2012

It’s a sad day hearing of the death of Australian aboriginal musician, singer, songwriter and health advocate Jimmy Little after a long battle against illness. For many, like me, will remember growing up with the only Aboriginal star on the Australian music scene.

He was a member of the Yorta-Yorta tribe and was born at the Cummeragunja Mission settlement near Echuca, on the NSW side of the Murray River IN 1937.

The Jimmy Little Foundation has been established with a mission to facilitate nutritional education and advocate for better health services for indigenous Australians in communities.

Inspirational to many…

Meet the Janoskians

April 2012

Isn’t social media a wonderful thing. Fame or should I say notoriety is an upload away. Inconspicuous, obscure, unimportant, unknown, unremarkable – worry not. Take a look at what Janoskians have achieved.

The Janoskians claim that “Haters are their motivators!”. If you haven't heard of the Janoskians, you really need to get into them right now. They are a group of boys from Melbourne who make “hilarious YouTube videos”, and they are “ridiculously popular” according to one web-based commentator.

Recently, an organized meet and greet with the boys at Luna Park in Melbourne was shut down because so many fans turned up!

After approximately 6000 fans showed up the police decided to step in and close it down.
